Why Antioxidants are important and why take it the nutrient-rich foods instead of supplements?

It is known that low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol gets oxidized and is responsible for the fat build up in the arteries.
This process is known as atherosclerosis and is the reason behind heart attacks and strokes. The use of antioxidant vitamin supplements were being tried to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol but the results have not encouraging.
